JCC's Jennica Berens Continues her Basketball Career at Walsh University

JAMESTOWN, NY - Jamestown Community College's (JCC) Jennica Berens (Glenham, South Dakota/Shelby Area HS) is advancing her academic and basketball careers at NCAA Division II Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio.

"I picked Walsh because I feel I'll be able to take the next step in not only basketball but also my career. They offer so many amazing opportunities, and I'm excited to explore and experience them all," said Berens.

Jennica racked up 11.5 points and seven rebounds per game in the green and gold, earning All-American honors as well as Region 3 Player of the Year.

"My coach, Dave Turnbull, was my biggest supporter and critic (in the best way) through the whole season. He helped me become a better person and athlete in one year. He helped me accomplish and achieve so many of my goals and dreams. I've always wanted to play at a higher level, and if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be where I'm at today," stated Berens.

When it comes to the classroom, the sophomore exceled there too, earning the Sophomore Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award. She plans to keep up the high GPA (grade point average) while studing criminal justice, something her time as a Jayhawk prepared her for.

"I feel that the professors were very helpful and not only knew the subject but also taught the subject and helped me understand it better," replied Berens.

Despite only spending one season at JCC, Jennica made a lifetime of memories.

"The one thing I'll miss about JCC is being able to play for Coach Dave (Turnbull). He was a huge inspiration to me, and I'll forever look up to him," Berens responded. "I have so many memories as a Jayhawk with all my teammates and friends, but my favorite one of them all is being able to walk across the stage with my best friends. They helped me through both semesters and were able to be there for me," she added.

Berens and the rest of the Walsh University Cavaliers begin their 2025-26 season in November.
