Two years ago, Williams Overo played very little off the bench for Jamestown Community College men's basketball coach George Sisson.

That doesn't figure to be a problem this season.

Williams poured in 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Jayhawks to a 91-82 NJCAA non-conference victory over Tompkins Cortland CC in the season opener for both teams at the Physical Education Complex on Thursday night.

"I don't know if Williams logged 50 minutes all (of the 2015-16) season,"Sisson said. "Then … he was able to get some practices (while sitting out the 2017-18 campaign). He came back this year and he's wanting to be leader."

If doing it best on the court qualifies one for leadership, then Overo appears to be on his way.

The forward from Queens shot 10 of 15 from the floor and scored 10 points spanning the first and second halves to break open a tight game. The Jayhawks led by as many as 22 points near the midway point of the second half and held off a late Panthers' run.

David Williams scored 12 points and dished out six assists; D.J. Branch also had 12 points; Zachary Kiadii added eight points and four assists; and Sherman native Chris Robson and Averi Parker chipped in six points apiece for Jamestown CC, which shot 52 percent from the field on the night.

Tahleek Weekes led Tompkins Cortland with a game-high 27 points, Mari Antenor had 18, Bakary Magas 13 and Jonathan Baker 11.

"I'm happy with all my guys," Sisson said. "I don't know if I had a guy who didn't play well. … It's 91 points and I'm thrilled with that. … I thought our pressure on the perimeter was pretty good in the first half. I thought in the second half we didn't have any help (in the interior).

"You can't let guys drive from 20, 30 feet out all the way to the rim, (but) there should be some things wrong in game one. It's like a game of hide and seek. Ready or not, here we come."

The Jayhawks return to action Saturday when they travel to Corning where they'll take on Broome CC in the Crossover Classic. For one game, though, the third-year coach was pleased.

"There were some things we did today that we haven't seen in practice very much, so I was pleasantly surprised with how well we handled the pressure and had the spacing of the floor," Sisson said.
