The Jamestown Community College men's basketball team is still looking for its first NJCAA Region 3 Division II basketball victory of the season, but Coach George Sisson has discovered something equally as important as that search continues.

"I hate losing, I hate losing," Sisson said after the Jayhawks fell to Erie CC, 94-85, on Wednesday night at the Physical Education Complex. "There's not one part of me that feels good, but there's parts of me that will say, 'I can coach this group.' I like this group, we're starting to come together. We're still learning how to do it at this level, night in and night out."

Last night's game was a close one the entire way — the Jayhawks (6-10, 0-6) led, 46-42, at intermission and by six points, 58-52, five minutes into the second half — but Erie CC used runs of 13-3 and 9-2 down the stretch to keep the hosts at bay.

Kasey Walker Gregg scored 21 points to pace six players in double figures as the Kats raised their record to 10-6, 2-2. Pedro Marquez added 15 points, Kyle Harris and Shevon Anisca each had 13, and Michael Motley and Winston Beato chipped in 12 apiece.

Terrance Cosby paced the Jayhawks with 18 points, Chris Robson added 15, David Williams, Averi Parker and Tavion King all had 11 and Germaine Wright chipped in 10.

"If we learn from it, we'll have a shot to be competitive at the end," said Sisson, who is without the services of his three top scorers and his two top rebounders from the first semester due to a combination of injury and ineligibility. "If we don't learn from it, we won't (be competitive). I told them in the locker room that this is up to you. I come to practice every day fired up and ready to go. They need to meet me there."

For the most part, the Jayhawks did, but after Parker drilled two free throws with 9:01 left in the game to close the margin to 70-68 the Kats went on their 9-2 run to finally give them some breathing room.

"I'm telling you, if these guys will hang with me and buy into what I'm about every day, we'll be OK. This team here is as good as any team in the region. … Listen, a lot of our guys are making progress."

Robson is one of those guys. The Sherman native shot 5 of 10 from the floor, including 3 of 7 from the arc, and converted both of his free throws.

"Now we have to figure out a way to get him (five or six) foul shots,"Sisson said.

The Jayhawks are also still getting accustomed to Cosby, the 6-foot-7 forward from Miramar, Florida, who was just became eligible for the second semester.

"You've got to remember he hasn't played basketball in almost two full years," Sisson said. "Give him some time. He missed 13 games the first semester."

Jamestown CC returns to action Saturday when it travels to Mercyhurst North East for a 3 p.m. tip-off.

"I think we've got some progress going," Sisson said. "We just have to keep grinding. I'm going to keep shoving right to the finish line. When we get there, (we'll know) we worked as hard as we could and we worked together as a team."
