YOUNGWOOD, Pa. - In their season-opening doubleheader, the Jamestown Community College baseball team split against Westmoreland County Community College, picking up the win in their first game.
Game 1: Jamestown Community College 7 - Westmoreland County Community College 0
The bats started to work early and often for the Jayhawks (1-1) with left fielder Wyatt Hennessy (Mukwonago, WI/Mukwonago HS) and third baseman Zach Zulawski (Melbounre, FL/Viera HS) collecting three hits each. Right fielder Billy Harmon (Racine, OH/Southern Local) led the offensive output with three runs batted in.
Hennessy got JCC's first run of the year on the, sending a moon shot over the right field fence in the third inning. In the fifth inning, the Jayhawks added a pair of runs with a sac fly from Harmon and Hennessy using his wheels to bring in another run to go up 3-0. JCC capped off the game with four more runs in the seventh thanks to a pair of doubles by Hennessy and shortstop Nate Johnson (Lakewood, NY/Southwestern High).
Right-hander Bryce Jackson (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) picked up where he left off last season, fanning three hits and striking out 13 batters, a career-high. The 13 strikeouts puts his career total at 100 strikeouts in 12 games played in.
Game 2: Westmoreland County Community College 12 - Jamestown Community College 7
In the backend of the doubleheader, the Wolfpack was able to get on the Jayhawks early, taking a 5-0 lead after the first inning of action. Westmoreland added another run on the second to make it a 6-0 game.
JCC got on the board in the third inning thanks to a groundout by Hennessy but drove home center fielder Ayden Reagle (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove HS) to make it 6-1. JCC got three runs back in the fourth inning courtesy of a two-run single by third baseman Tanner Potter (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg HS) to make it a 6-4 game.
The Wolfpack extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth with four more runs scored to help put the game out of reach.
Pitcher Aaron Hair (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) earned the loss on the mound, giving up five earned runs. Zach Rohlin (Russel, PA/Eisenhower HS) went 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs. Alex Kemery (Youngsville, PA/Youngsville HS) went the rest of the way on the mound, fanning out six hits and giving up a pair of runs.
The teams will meet once again tomorrow, March 18th, for the rubber match starting at 12 p.m.
