Jayhawks Cruise Past CCBC in Season-Opener

JAMESTOWN - Making his coach debut, head coach Dave Turnbull and the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team took care of the Community College of Beaver County Saturday afternoon, 63-39.

The Jayhawks (1-0) had three players score in double figures led by freshman guard Destiny Evans (Peoria, IL/Lorain HS) with 19 points and 13 rebounds (8 offene, 5 defense). Guard Kymi Nance (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) added 16 points with D'Auzhanay Harden (Erie, PA/Erie HS) chipping in with 10 points. Forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) picked up where she left off last season, grabbing a game-high 18 rebounds (5 offense, 13 defense).

Nance got the offense going for JCC, hitting her first three-point attempt of the season as Evans found her for the bucket. From there, the Jayhawks went on a 9-2 run to open the game with contributions from Hicks, Evans and guard Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS)

The Titans battled throughout the first quarter, cutting the deficit to five points on multiple occasions. That didn't seem to discourage the Jayhawks as they closed out the frame with back-to-back layups from Evans, both off the feed from Hicks, to make it a 19-10 after one.

JCC got their first double-digit lead of the game early in the second quarter with Evans continuing to find her way to the basket.

At the halfway point of the quarter, the Jayhawks saw their lead grow as much as 19 thanks to eight unanswered with Nance and Evans both scoring four points each during the run.

Going into the break, the Jayhawks would hold a 35-18 lead.

Keeping their sizable lead throughout the third quarter, the Jayhawks' lead was as many as 26 points with a basket from Harden to make it 60-34 with just over two minutes remaining in the game.

The Jayhawks shot 26-for-68 (38.2 percent) from the floor while the Titans went 11-for-66 (16.7 percent) from the field. The Jayhawks held a sizable advantage on the boards, grabbing 60 rebounds to the Titans' 45. The Jayhawks also dominated the paint, scoring 46 points to the Titans' 14 points.

The Jayhawks will be back in action next Friday, November 12th, as they travel to Garrett College for day one of the Garrett College Classic. Tip is set for 5 p.m.
