Jayhawks Upend The Tribunes In The Semifinals

SANBORN - During the NJCAA Region 3 Women's Basketball Semifinal game, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team defeated Monroe Community College, 61-44 at host Niagara County Community College Saturday afternoon.

 

The Jayhawks (13-13) were led by guard Kymi Nance (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) with 17 points while D'Auzhanay Harden (Erie, PA/Erie HS), Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights), and Zalika Stevens (Ajax, Ontario, Canada/THornlea Secondary School) each added 11 points in the win. Hicks got it done once again on the boards, grabbing 20 rebounds (3 offense, 17 defense) with Stevens adding nine boards (3 offense, 6 defense).

 

Both teams did not gain an inch on each other after a quarter of play, deadlocked at 13-13. Rolling over into the second quarter, much of the same as each team were still figuring the other out. JCC did take back-to-back baskets from Harden and Stevens into the half up, 21-17.

 

JCC took the slight lead and built upon it into the third quarter, scoring 17 unanswered to begin the frame. During the stretch, Stevens led the way by scoring seven points. Also during the frame, the Jayhawks led by as many as 16 points and outscored the Tribunes 26-4.

 

The Jayhawks went 26-for-61 (42.6 percent) from the floor while the Tribunes went 20-for-71 (28.2 percent) from the field. JCC controlled the glass, grabbing 53 rebounds to MCC's 36 rebounds.

 

JCC will now go on to face the No. 1 seed Niagara County Community College in the championship game with tip set for 12 p.m.

 

Prior to the game, Hicks and Nance were presented NJCAA Region 3 First Team All-Region honors with Harden receiving Region 3 Second Team All-Region honors. Hick was also presented the Region 3 Player of the Year award with head coach Dave Turnbull being named the Region 3 Coach of the Year.
