Jayhawks To Face Union County In The NJCAA District East Semifinals

JAMESTOWN – It was announced late Sunday evening that the Jamestown Community College received an At-Large bid to compete in this weekend's NJCAA District East A & B Women's Basketball Championships this Saturday at Niagara County Community College.

 

The Jayhawks (13-14) earned the bid with Region 3 being the host region this year. The host region is allowed two participating institutions to compete in the tournament. Along with JCC and NCCC, Union County College of Region 19 and Sullivan County Community College of Region 15 will be competing as well.

 

Union County earned the automatic bid by winning the Region 19 Championship, defeating Harcum College Sunday afternoon 74-61. Sullivan County earned the automatic bid by winning the Region 15 Championship Sunday afternoon, defeating Westchester Community College 88-70.

 

JCC had been awarded the No. 4 seed, playing against the No. 1 seed Union County who finished the regular season No. 9 in the country. The Jayhawks played against the Owls earlier in the season, falling 87-54. In the matchup, JCC was led by the trio of guards Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS), Kymi Nance (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS), and forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) who combined for 39 points. Nance and Hicks are coming off their NJCAA Region 3 Women's Basketball Championship All-Tournament Team selection where the duo combined over 30 points per game while Hicks grabbed 18.5 rebounds per game.

 

On the year, the Owls are averaging 82 points per game while dishing out 20.7 assists per game. Brianna Mills and Samira Sargent are the leading point scorers for Union County, scoring 14.6 points per game. On the glass, the Owls average just under 50 rebounds per game with Rissel Rodriguez leading the way with nine rebounds per game.

 

The teams will play at 3 p.m. With the win, the Jayhawks will automatically earn a berth into the 2022 NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship at the SC4 Fieldhouse in Port Huron, MI.

 

The winner of the game will go on to play the winner of the Niagara County CC vs. Sullivan County CC game on Sunday, March 6th, at 12 p.m.
