Jayhawks Look to Grow off Strong First Year Under Coach Ross

JAMESTOWN, NY - The Jamestown Community College women's soccer team is primed to take another step in 2024 after finishing 2023 with their first playoff appearance since 2016. JCC returns three starters from last year's squad in sophomores Juliet Thuman, Haleigha Hardy, and Alexis Lundmark. "I am really excited to see how everyone plays together, with all the new talent that we have... I am really excited to see how far we can get this year," said Thuman. "We are excited to have a new group of girls to work with. It is super exciting to be back," added Hardy.

A large part of the excitement and anticipation for the returners is getting another year under head coach Heather Ross. The bench boss was in year number one with the Jayhawks a season ago, but campaign number two has the squad wanting more postseason action. "Definitly to get back to the playoffs again. That would be super exciting. Maybe getting passed out first game. A couple of more playoff games. Going further than the first one," mentioned Hardy. "I really like coaches style of coaching. I think already we have the latent to get further than we did last year," said Thuman, a Buffalo native who appeared in ten games last year. "It will take a lot of hard work and dedication. People will have to put a lot of time into it, but I think we will do well this year," she added.

Both Thuman and Hardy, who is a Pine Valley product, believe team bonding will be a key in 2024. "It is extremely important that everyone works together. We need to know how everyone works on the field, who likes to go where, which foot people use, and who goes in which direction. It all helps us work together as a more efficient unit," said Hardy. "We've already started to hang out more as a team. It has helped us learn who everyone is, what they like, and how they play. What side do they like, left or right, it really helps a lot. We are learning what everyone's interests are beyond soccer," added Thuman.

Jamestown also has nine newcomers in 2024. That group is highlighted by Grace Gaurino who played guard for the women's basketball team in 2023, but the itch to take the pitch was too much not to scratch this fall.

The JCC women get their first test on Saturday, August 31st, when they host Fulton-Montgomery Community College at 4:00 PM.
